er, this would all be valid if MandrakeSoft weren't a global capitalist :-) I think you're mistaking "a financial concern which sells services related to GPL-licensed software that it produces in order to sell services" for "a non-profit organization which produces GPL-licensed software for non-fiscal purposes. For the latter, you're looking at Debian, Lunar... not MandrakeSoft.
Please keep in mind, I'm not complaining -- I'm as fond of eating and paying the mortgage as the next guy and I gladly give MandrakeSoft money for the distribution. However, they are a for-profit publically traded organization selling a bundle of goods and services which I am buying with those dollars. It's a capitalist transaction, enabled by operation in a global economy. If I want to do what you're describing, I can download Lunar Linux and mail Chuck Mead a check and some brownies.
