er, this would all be valid if MandrakeSoft weren't a global capitalist
:-) I think you're mistaking "a financial concern which sells services
related to GPL-licensed software that it produces in order to sell
services" for "a non-profit organization which produces GPL-licensed
software for non-fiscal purposes. For the latter, you're looking at
Debian, Lunar... not MandrakeSoft.

Please keep in mind, I'm not complaining -- I'm as fond of eating and
paying the mortgage as the next guy and I gladly give MandrakeSoft money
for the distribution. However, they are a for-profit publically traded
organization selling a bundle of goods and services which I am buying
with those dollars. It's a capitalist transaction, enabled by operation
in a global economy. If I want to do what you're describing, I can
download Lunar Linux and mail Chuck Mead a check and some brownies.
