Yes ! Some cheap drives will work okay and some are complete garbage and will
barely work at all after extensive tweaking.

Yes. You will need a drive that works, ide-scsi emulation turned on at boot
time, and a little patience to read a couple docs and set things up with
whichever software front end you use. ( Or just use the command line tools for
simple things like copying a data CD -- use dd and cdrecord )

I have always stayed away from the cheaper drives. I have installed a half
dozen or so Yamaha's with excellent results. You will pay $$$ for them though.

I helped out a friend that had gotten a Que brand and it was a piece of crap.
I finally got it working, after a couple days worth of effort, and then it
only works sort-of.

I know some people on this list have found less expensive brands that seemed
to work well.
