For CDRW I've got an ASUS (Yes ASUS) CDRW that rarely burns coasters despite my best efforts to teach it how. ($40) One thing I have learned. Never burn a disk at a speed higher than the box that reads it can do. My DVD/CD on the laptop is 8x if I go higher when burning it, the laptop often has trouble. But if I stay at <=8x... no sweat.
