That would be around 1970. Its my understanding that MMY had been substantially funding Shantanada's seat prior to that -- though its based on various convos, not one air-tight source. And during that era, there was lots of money flowing -- the suitcase story is from that era. And some of the TTC's in India went to see Shantananda I believe, as did some of the 108 around 1973. Regardless, as I have understood it, Shantananda was asked to step down due to his lack of qualifications. Which he did. And his successors have been banned from using the title Shankaracharaya. His linneage does not appear to have much power or respect other than from the TMO. But he was I sweet man I hear.
