I think it's a common ability for long term meditators who are used to working with different meditational techniques that emphasize different aspects of the mind and consciousness (e.g. ishta meditation, open presence and attentional styles of meditation). It's not something you'd see in meditators who don't know how to work with the mind, but just do a rote formula. The Mind Mirror is a fun tool to play with.

He actually lists the different types of meditation he used in one of his books. When I first posted it here years ago, it really upset some people--their reactions were as interesting as the video!
