Perhaps that Anon should have said,

That is not fully correct Sal. Tom wished for the destruction of the
portion of the french quarter that he perceives to be saturated with
centuries of voodoo practices. Which in his view appear to be a
negative influence. Its ironic though, that people are aghast at Tom's
thought, but only chuckle at Raja's advocation of the destruction of
an entire city to rid percieved negativity.

Why the difference in reactions I wonder? It appears the Raja's plans
are more radically than Tom's mere wish. And if Tom is condemed, by
not the raja's plans four fold more? Do people simply percieve the
raja's plans as more ridiculous than Tom's wish?

And the larger issue is to what extent should "religious or spiritual"
reasons serve as justifications for radical "transformations". While
respecting religious traditions, if they at some point encroach on the
rights and property of others. Yagyas, communion, attending a sadir
dinner, yogic flying, are all essentially non-obtrusive. And as
religious or spiritual practices should be respected.

But what about religious practices that call for the destruction of a
mosque, the razing of a city, the absolute rights to a "divinely
endowed" piece of land, the destruction of another civilzation, the
pushing of an established country "into the sea". Then it gets more
complicated -- and the religious or spiritual soverernty over
non-obtrusive acts cannot be extended without restriction to obtrusive
acts.
