G'day,

We've been carefully reading the 3.2 release notes and the 3.2
documentation about the new web-based Admin client to determine if we
can use it as part of the custom work-flow system we're building for a
pilot project using FedoraCommons. We're currently on FC 3.1 and use the
Java Swing client to bulk ingest large numbers of objects via FOXML
files built by custom applications. We also use many of its other
features - such as purging objects - regularly.
In fact, the only major feature we don't use is Batch processing.

We're particularly concerned about the following statement in the
Release Notes:

    /The enhancements below introduce a web-based repository
    adminstrative client

Although the legacy java-swing client is still included in the
release, this represents an initial move towards its deprecation.
    /

The detailed description of the new Admin client (as compared to the
Java Swing client) in
http://fedora-commons.org/confluence/display/DEV/Old+Admin+Features is
extremely concerning - particularly the following statements:

/The following list of features are those which are provided by the
'old' Fedora Administrator. For comparison purposes, features in
lighter font are those which have not been implemented in the Web
Administator. It is possible that some of these features will be
    implemented in the future.// /

The new Admin client's functionality is significantly reduced compared
to the current Java client!
Although we applaud the development of a web-based client, we will not
be able to use it in our pilot project as-is:
the functions we currently need are not available.

What are the plans for the future functionality of the new Admin client?
What is the time-frame for the retirement of the Java Swing client?

TIA!

Janna Wemekamp
