I am a doctoral student in Connecticut, and first got involved with feral cats when I helped my aunt catch, socialize, and find homes for four feral kittens living under her deck when I went home to the midwest for a long weekend. I used Alley Cat Allies fact sheets for guidance. Upon returning to Connecticut, I joined a local rescue group in New Haven, and now serve on their Board as development director. I continue to volunteer for this group, and also do private rescue work on my own. I do have a situation that I would like to describe to all of you, and would appreciate any feedback or input you might have. I recently trapped and socialized a feral kitten living in a parking lot. The kitten has a wonderful home, with a close family member. We are fostering him right now, until he is well enough to go to this home. He was very sick when I caught him and the veterinarian who treated him thought that it was Calici. After treating him with Clavamox, he was later diagnosed with a urinary infection, and treated with Baytril. When I took him in to be neutered, the veterinarian indicated that the lymph nodes in his hind legs were still swollen (I was cognizant of this swelling, and we were actively monitoring it). He was tested for, and diagnosed with, Bartonella. He has been on Zithromax for just over two weeks. While I have noted some decrease in the swelling of his lymph nodes, they are still undeniably swollen. May I ask if any of you have faced a similar situation and, if so, how long it typically takes the swelling of the lymph nodes to significantly decrease? Although I am relatively new to rescue work, I am aware that Bartonella is tricky to treat. I would value any input you might have, and thank you in advance for it. This group seems wonderfully supportive, and I look forward to contributing. Sincerely, Ermelinda |
