Remember that in traditional cultures there was/is no division 
between art and craft.  It is all the same and is all valid and 
valued.  We get so caught up in these definitions.  Many handcrafted 
objects, functional and nonfunctional are works of art.  It is our 
modern culture that makes these distinctions.  I believe it is routed 
in modern western culture which saw men as artists and women doing 
the crafts.  Of course if you study women's art history you find out 
there were woman passing off there work under men's names.
