I hope I didn't imply that it had to have message content.  I also 
readily agree that it can have esthetic content based on design etc. 
I believe they used to refer to it as decorative in art school.  I 
have a real problem with that term as the implication was "lesser 
value."  And then with textiles you get in to the politics of it 
being "women's work."

It's interesting that these discussions haven't come up since art 
school but they are always stimulating.

 As an art historian, I'm not sure I agree with the idea that art 
necessarily conveys a message, although I do believe that it is 
based on intention.
