Vuescan has an "autoexpose" option, which will work out the exposure 
required for the highlights.  If you do a preview with this ticked and 
then untick it, it will show the current exposure value.  After you do 
a scan with this setting for the highlights, you can then manually 
increase this number to increase the exposure time for the next shadow 
optimised scan.  (Doubling the number equates to +1EV, halving it 
equates to -1 EV.)

This will NOT work with the Acer Scanwit as it cannot vary exposure 
time.  Otherwise, the only issue is whether pixel registration between 
scans is accurate enough for the 2 scans to be merged without 
softening the image.  This varies between different scanners.
