I also noticed a remarkable improvement when I checked it, but it still is
not producing anything sharper than my HP PhotoSmart. I've been reading the
documentation and a line in it stuck out like a sore thumb, where it said
the image will degrade if you scan it at a radically different resolution
than what you want to view it at, whether on the monitor or on a printer.
That's exactly what I've been doing: scanning at 4000dpi and viewing the
results on my monitor, downsampled to fill my 1856x1392 display (21"
Cornerstone, which has the Hitachi tube in it). This is aproximately a 3 to
1 linear reduction. I'm on lunch break right now so can't experiment, but I
plan on running some tests tonight and putting the results up on my
PhotoPoint site so that interested parties can see for themselves what is
going on (if anything). I've had trouble putting things up on PhotoPoint
larger than 1024x768, so we'll see if I can even get them up there. I'll try
for 1280x1024. I don't have my own web site yet, so I'm at the mercy of
PhotoPoint.
