I don't think the ossia tool has improved since the old days. Nonetheless, I still use it for doing exactly what it's designed to do: creating a one-measure ossia above a staff, in the margin or at the bottom of the page. It's possible to master these situations without the ossia tool, using staff styles or creating a measure in another file and importing it as a graphic, but I find these solutions more complicated than using the ossia tool. Once you're used to the way it works, it's very fast: no messing around with optimizing/unoptimizing (you can add an ossia directly to an optimized score), no need to fiddle things so as to get a clef or key signature to show up, all options in one place (the ossia measure designer)...
