I'm on 2001d and on Windows. If I use the hide note function (on a note-by-note basis) in Speedy, the hidden notes are then NOT incorporated into the spacing procedure.
However, on my version I can't seem to get Staff styles applied to a partial measure. Maybe this is a feature which is available only in later versions. I think you might get good results if you try hiding what you want from within Speedy, then apply your staff style with the "%" marking on the already hidden notes.
