Right now, it's a dead heat between Coda and Quark for the ignominious title of "software developer with its head deepest in the sand." Both of these companies have been bleeding users like mad to inferior competitors, purely because of their inability to release an OS X version in a timely manner. But I figure in the end, it will be Coda by a nose. All I can hope for at this point is that FinMac 2004 will be solid, stable, and fast. Sibelius 2.1 is none of these things -- but it *is* OS X native, and that alone has been enough to seriously hurt Coda's market share.
And unfortunately did two things to help Sibelius which Sibelius in no way deserved:
1) provided a cash infusion when OSX users jumped off the Finale ship and switched to Sibelius (including some schools and colleges);
2) provided a valuable piece of marketing hype for Sibelius to use to further attract Mac users away from Finale and to draw new users who had been undecided between the initial ease of Sibelius and the true notational power of Finale.
I do hope that Coda gets an OSX version out the door because I would hate for it to be hurt any more financially and to recoup what it has lost by being so late, simply because the company is so relatively small that losing the entire Mac market could seriously impact the Windows part of the company as well.
I would hate to think that Sibelius might gain in undeserved market share simply because Coda stumbled -- the comparison to the VHS/Betamax battle is somewhat valid with the exception that the comparison between VHS and Betamax was somewhat more even while there really is no comparison between Sibelius and Finale, from a professional engraving point of view. The thought that Sibelius can gain an undeserved leg up on the market simply because it works on OSX and Finale doesn't yet is very sickening.
And I have and work with both programs, so I am comparing them from personal experience.
Let's ALL hope that the 2004 release of Finale really works on OSX!
