Dear Wise Ones

Can anyone tell me what a *typical* *traditional* Klezmer band line-up of
instruments would be? I need to arrange some music in that style, and have
in mind that clarinet and violin are prominent, possibly also accordion -
but other than that am not so sure!

That's rather like asking what the instrumentation should be for a typical Dixieland jazz group: the instrumentation for both was highly variable--and indeed, the two genres are closely related. Anyway, for klezmer music the core always would be voice, clarinet, violin, and trombone and/or tuba. Accordion was very common, so were trumpet and/or sax (A or T), and contrabass. All this is for American klezmorim of the early 20th century. European klezmer music of the same and earlier periods varied considerably from this, depending on time and place. I would recommend making an arrangement that would work if played only by the core ensemble, but that would include optional parts for everything else I've mentioned. Hope this helps.

To be slightly TAN, if I need to, how should I go about writing for the
accordion?

Standard five-line notation, on two staves. There are special symbols for registration, but other than that entirely normal. For klezmer and other pop purposes, you might want to write on just a single staff, w. chord names above.
