How do you notate the vibraphone, with a single staff or with two?
One. All the mallet instruments traditionally get one staff each, though there will be times when the marimba (only) needs two.
In general what instruments need necessarily two staves?
In a score, it is acceptable to show any polyphonic instrument on a single staff to save space, if the distribution of notes makes sense that way (it's a form of optimization). In extracted parts, the piano and harp must have two staves, and the organ three (unless we're talking about an organ w.o pedals, in wh. case two staves). All other keybd. insts. get two.
