Perhaps you have different combs from what we get in the copy shops here in
Germany. Those we have are noisy however loosely they are bound (the plastic
itself makes most of the noise since they are not completely smooth). Our
Recording staff at WDR will not allow any choir to sing from such scores
(it's different for us in the orchestra since we have a lot less page turns)
any more, and in the past they've had to take their music apart in recording
sessions.
Wire combs are a different thing, they can be very quiet if they are done
well.
