However, one annoyance is that if you have a Fin2k4 or 2k5 file with expressions that *are* defined for keyswitching during playback, you must set the playback options to "None" for Finale 2k6 (or, at least, the ones Human Playback recognizes). This can get a bit squirrelly because there's (AFAIK) no list of exactly what is actually IN the HP dictionary in 2k6. So you will discover that it recognizes "mute," but not "st. mute" or "straight mute" -- those last two still need to be defined for playback. But once you figure that out, it's relatively easy to convert a file set up for GPO Studio and 2k5 to the GPO AU/VST plugins and 2k6.

Of course, would it not have been too much trouble for Makemusic to include all of these HP changing expressions into the Maestro and Jazz default files? At least then we would know what's going to happen - if you have to define your own, then you know it probably won't change the playback (unless you manually make it so).

This lack of transparency is something that contributes to newbies' frustrations with Finale, IMHO.

I think you misunderstood. In Fin2k5, if you wanted GPO to work, you had to use expressions designed to trigger a MIDI keyswitch. In Fin2k6, with Human Playback on, these MIDI keyswitches are triggered automatically (and appropriately for each instrument) without having to define anything.

It's actually quite easy. Just create an expression that says "pizz.," and assign it to a staff (or set of staves), and it plays back correctly without any tweaking or fuss.

The only problem here is that if you have an old Fin2k5 with expressions defined for keyswitching, you must *undefine* them in order for HP to interpret them correctly.

The default files for Fin2k6 also include keyswitching expressions pre-defined for playback that will work even when Human Playback is OFF. But if you try to use them with Human Playback ON, they won't work.
