I imagine the idea was to distribute this third violin part to selected members of the firsts and/or seconds to substitute for the mvt. 3 they had in their parts.

I suspected that this was the way it was in the old Kalmus set. That set also has seperate piano and celeste parts, even though they can easily be covered by one player. This caused the hiring of two players at least once, probably many more times than once.
