Interesting idea. I had no hairpins anywhere nearby, but I took off the two > accent marks. The first blatt changed pitch, and the second was quieter. Both were still there, though. Perhaps this is related to dynamic level? So I changed the dynamic from fff to mf and the blatts were gone. This much I can at least take into an audio editor and fix! Thanks for that workaround.
