Dennis,
Lyric spacing is exactly the same in Fin2007 as it is in Fin2008, so
going backwards won't help you. However, hyphens are fixed in Fin2008a
(for the first time since Fin2005 or so) so you are much better off
with Fin2008a.
Turning on "Avoid Collision of Lyrics" has always caused spacing
distortions. You will get much more professional results with "avoid
collision of lyrics" turned off, and manually adjusting spacing and/or
syllables where necessary.
I use a workaround suggested by Mark D. Lew, which is:
1) With Avoid Collision of Lyrics ON, space the music.
2) Make all necessary layout adjustments, then lock the layout.
3) Turn Avoid Collision of Lyrics OFF, then respace the music.
4) Look for collisions and adjust manually. TGTools shift-numplus and
shift-numminus can be helpful here.

Thanks, Eric! I just can't believe that Finale can't handle
melismas! Uncheck "avoid collision of lyrics" causes many more
problems than it solves. Your #2 recipe may work, but I don't think
I'd like to have to apply it to all the melismas. So I'll either go
back to 2007... or look into some other software sold for a song not
long ago.
