Are you talking about plastic coils or metal coils?  I've been using plastic
coils for years and have a hard time even imagining one breaking, short of
using wire cutters on it.

Yes, plastic coils. I've not had many of them break, but I have had a few. The same as comb bindings -- I've not had many break, but I have had a few.
