Linda, it might be a type 0/type 1 issue.

MIDI files come in two flavours - well actually three, but that's beside
the point - and maybe Finale can deal only with type 0, not with type 1,
MIDI files (the opposite is less common). You can check if this is the
case by trying a type1-to-type0 converter, or a type0-to-type1.

Are you on Windows? If so, this site has a wealth of such MIDI tools,
including the ones you need.

The only downside is that these programs are command line utilities, so
there's no point and click interface.
