My next suggestion would be 'fink remove xfree86-rootless' then do 'sudo 
apt-get install xfree86-rootless' and install the binary.

Also just out of  interest what happens when rename the XDarwin folder 
to XDarwin.app???

and when you do a 'fink remove xfree86-rootless' is the XDarwin folder 
being removed????
