Ted the xfree86-rootless binary is at the same version as if you were building it from source I would go that way just for simplicity. :)

Give that ago, and see what happens I recently had a harddrive crash and had to reinstall everything and I wanted xfree back in a hurry so just went 'sudo apt-get install xfree86-base' and 'sudo apt-get install-xfree86-rootless' and had X up and running within a couple of minutes.
