There was an earlier thread about an identical problem running KDE in
rootless mode.  I don't remember if they installed it via apt-get or
from source. 

Were you able run ICEwm and fvwm in rootless mode?  There was a question
in the prior thread from Torrey Lyons at XonX about whether other window
managers worked OK.
