OK ... I'll give it another go ... 

I presume you mean they take a long time to start with other non-K WMs,
i.e., whilst they're cranking up the KDE stuff under the bonnet/hood? 
(I merely ask because they start relatively quickly under KDE; but only
after KDE itself has taken ages to start up.)

Yes, these were fine ... KDE is the only desktop/WM I've not been able
to run rootless successfully.
