I have followed the instruction in FAQ8.12, but no joy. fink install system-xfree86 returns Failed: no package found for specification 'system-xfree86'!
Where does the FAQ say that you should install system-xfree86?
Forgive me for reading more than the FAQ... it says you should install it at
http://fink.sourceforge.net/pdb/package.php/system-xfree86
and I saw nothing saying this was different for Panther.
Funny, this is not what I read on this page.
Please read it again (FAQ#8.11 for Panther rather than 8.12).
You should read the FAQ again - the instructions for what to do in 8.12 and 8.11 are exactly the same, so this isn't terribly useful advice.
Yes, both agree that you should *remove* any installed system-xfree86 package. OTOH, 8.12 talks about downloading the X11 package from Apple, and we had beginners doing actually this, although they had everything they needed on their Panther install CDs.
Anyway, resolved now - my mac went into a SPOD freeze shortly after this point on another install, and believed in system-free86 when restarted, so who knows what was the problem.
Good for you.
