This is very strange, as my Fink installation on my old
machine (OS X 10.2.8) worked like a champ.

It seems that every package I try to install errors out in a similar
fashion. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please reply back if this solves the problem--there have been a number
of people reporting dpkg-split errors.
