Hanspeter and Alex, thanks to you both for hanging with me on this-I know that
you have much more pressing issues than helping to get one of these old ppc
machines to behave well. Yes, I had done a software update after installing
leopard, and forgot about the problem of Apple's X11 wiping out Xquartz in the
process (I think at one point I had Xquartz installed). Reinstalled Xquartz
2.6.3 and all is well in ppc land: xfig now uses firefox to read the html
version of its users manual just fine, and fink's xpdf reads the pdf version.
As usual, your support is above and beyond the call. Thanks again.
