Hi all,
Early this week I needed wxWidgets installed on my Mac, so I thought, "No problem! I'll just install it with Fink!"
Searching Fink Commander's table for "wxwidgets" revealed no such package, unfortunately, so I thought, "It's probably still in development. I'll check the Package Submission Tracker."
Again no such luck. There was no package by the name "wxwidgets", so I thought, "Well, I guess I'll just have to write one myself."
And I did. I spent quite a few hours of my spare time this week creating, testing, and debugging a very nice .info file for wxWidgets. But just as I was about to submit it to the Tracker, I accidentally made a startling discovery: a wxWidgets package already exists in Fink! But it's not called wxWidgets; it's called wxMac.
So it seems I wasted a lot of time for nothing, simply because the wxWidgets package isn't actually called wxWidgets. Now, I realize that there is some logic behind this, given that there is a wxGTK package, and therefore a wxMac package makes some sense, but nevertheless I'm sure there's going to be some other poor fool who does exactly what I did, mistakenly thinking that Fink doesn't have a wxWidgets package.
To prevent this from happening, I'm wondering what could be done. Could a virtual package be added, called wxWidgets, that maps to wxMac? Or perhaps there's some mechanism in Fink for specifying package aliases/synonyms? For instance, the Fink database could include both "wxmac" and "wxwidgets" separately in its package list but map each one to the same package.
Any suggestions? Thanks,
Trevor
