So you mean I should remove x11, recompile nmap, install it, and then reinstall x11 again? Would I need to recompile xfree86 as well ? (I'm thinking it shouldn't be necessary)

I have in addition
/sw/bin/nmapfe
/sw/bin/xnmap
(actually, I see now that xnmap is a symlink to nmapfe)

I have
/sw/share/man/man1/nmapfe.1
/sw/share/man/man1/xnmap.1
Otherwise, I have the same as you. No idea how this is possible. Maybe if you compile nmap while X11 is not installed?

First, I think I'll simply try to make nmap form scratch again, paying more attention to what it's actually doing. But I might try what you suggested if I get the time. Thanks.
