Since you're using CVS updating, there are umpteen things that can give you "execution of su failed":

su is still working from the command line and selfupdate had worked just fine before, so I have no idea what's going wrong: I am now running 10.3.1 (7C107) on G5 - last selfupdate was run with 10.3
Any advice would be appreciated.
