All right. I didn't want to have to go this route, but it may be necessary to go for the big guns:
sudo dpkg --remove --force-all emacs21
(emacs20 for Felix)
sudo dpkg --remove --force-all emacsen-common
I think you need even bigger guns, namely to edit directly some stuff in the dpkg database. I cannot say exactly what it takes (probably best to nuke all of the emacs files in /sw/var/lib/dpkg/), but I remember having been in this same situation a long time ago. It was such a traumatic experience that I decided to never touch Fink's emacs packages again. Xemacs is a different story, I use it all the time.
