It's his brand new G5 that gave me the fits. My laptop has had no trouble with XDarwin via Fink. Can I assume a lot of Fink stuff will barf with 3.1 missing?

There are indeed a couple of packages that need this. Often they announce it and refuse even to start building when gcc-3.1 is not present.


xfree86 is slightly different, because it uses gcc-3.3 for compilation. Only for making these scripts it uses the preprocessor from gcc-3.1 instead of the broken one from gcc-3.3. Otherwise it would produce the same broken scripts that Apple has put into its X11 on Panther (partially fixed on 10.3.4).
