According to the prosecuters he was a Libyan agent and it was revenge for the 1986 US bombing of Tripoli. You can also look at the homicide figures for Northern Ireland and see that they increased from a dozen or so deaths per year in the 60s to hundreds when the Troubles started. -- Tim
