Why _only_ NFS? That's not true today. Since 2.5 it's possible to place
shadows on windows network drives too. There was a number of requests
for such feature, and in 2.5 it was implemented. Shadows are alive and
supported, and suggestion to drop them is not correct.

What about multiple files database - here I agree, it's time for that
support to be gone. Even if one wants to use small drives to copy
databases in shutdown state between hosts, there are dozens (if not
hundreds) of 3d-party software, that can divide file into parts
compressing if wanted.
