Situation Nr. 1 is a pre-Firebird3 server. I think for the next 5 to 10 years we will have a lot of situations where an application uses the Fb3 client to connect to a Fb 1.x/2.x server. So if you want to avoid a situation where there are several connection attemps going on at the same time, we need the URL type db string solution described by Michael so only IPv4 gets tried by the client.
