I have not done "endurance riding" but I have done Performance  Driving, 
which is basically the carting version of endurance. It is similar to  
endurance, 
with the vet checks and P&R tracking and recovery times factored  in along 
with time and distance. The trails are hilly and can be quite  challenging. One 
year we did the 9.5 mile segment in just under 1 hour and 15  minutes (with 
over 90 degree temps), and our recovery was well under the  allowable time. The 
Vet remarked that he never realized that Fjords could be  that fit. The next 
year the same Vet was there and remarked to  his assistant "This is the horse I 
was telling you about - the one that hardly  broke a sweat last year."
 
I was doing about 3 - 5 miles a day, at least 5 days a week, at the  walk and 
trot to get her in shape for this competition.
