This does not sound like a good situation for any horse - let alone an unhandled eight year old, double let alone a stallion. Sometimes 'free' can be very expensive indeed - think injuries, think vet bills, think liability.
If the kids are really interested in horses they should go take lessons from a trainer and if they can't afford that they should volunteer to muck in exchange for lesson time. Having a horse at home is a huge responsibility and people need to learn a lot before embarking on it.
