Dear folks,
Alfred is an interesting guy and I wouldn't want anyone to pick on him. As
you might expect, I am interested in all sorts of weak signal stuff and that
goes all the way back to 1950's 1296 EME and today to the use of the great
new technology for emergency communications. About a year ago I made the
mistake of admitting that I hadn't mastered all of the features of my
Flex5000A. That produced some of the most violent abuse I had ever
experienced in ham radio! I'm not ashamed to admit that I might use the
V/U upgrade on repeaters to chew the rag with a half dozen or so old
friends who are my age and see the world in much the same light as I do!

I don't get it.
You have one of the best weak-signal radios on the planet and you
are using it for ... REPEATERS?
CTCSS - phooey!
Not really. I have a dual-band FM rig in the shack that may get turned
on
once a month to find one of the locals. It cost a fraction of the price
of
the VU upgrade. The capabilities of the FLEX are completely wasted.
OTOH, if you have no FM rig in the shack and you are going to get the
VU5K,
why not use that for FM if it will do that? I agree that it is probably a
waste to get the VU5K just for FM but if FM is its secondary purpose ...
