I do not have my 3000 (yet, hopefully its shipped next week) but I suspect that the skill of the listener will trump the differences between the 5000 and the 3000 in almost all cases.
I see contesting friends who are perpetual winners that are using mid-range radios (ic-746s, ts-850, omni-VI) and spend their money outside the shack. I think the 3000 will flourish in contester shacks, personally. They can be stacked in a rack, having 2 rigs per band is affordable.
