Unless you choose 64-bit you will shortly encounter some memory issues.
Plus, as more and more apps are optimized to run on 64-bit machines, you
will fall farther and farther behind the performance curve.

I hated Vista with a purple passion but I'm very happy with Win7/64.  Just
remember to take it out of Billy-knows-best mode by disabling its insistence
on driver signing.

I use Kaspersky and find it perfectly satisfactory but you are correct, Neal
(to whose expertise I bow) and lots of other people swear by NOD32.
