This works fine for me...
... in .bash_profile
alias fly='xinit   .fly"

the file .fly contains:
exec /usr/local/bin/fgfs --fg-root=/usr/local/FlightGear --airport-id=KSFO 
--aircraft=c172-3d

type "fly" and remove the vagarities of the WM.
