Out of curiosity what can't you do today that would make FlightGear

One big issue is that "out of the box", glut is either broken, or non-existant now on many linux distributions. It just became broke for debian users that run nvidia drivers. (Along with all the other issues Andy mentioned.) This isn't so much an issue of functionality right now, but more of an issue of supporting what people are already likely to have installed on their machines (or can easily get installed on their machines.) As is well documented, the glut licensing makes it almost impossible to fix it's known issues, free glut has show stopping limitations or doesn't support all platforms we want to support.

Perhaps we could say that what is "better" is that FlightGear might build more easily, or more cleanly, or with fewer issues on more people's boxes if we go with SDL (or at least allow a choice which is the current direction we are heading.)

I understand that there are (or at least were) issues between SDL and cygwin, but perhaps it would be more productive to address that problem directly ...

Curt.
