Just jumping in here with a quick comment. The issue is not with the
terrain or the mesh simplification algorithm.
The issue here is the low resolution of the vmap0 data set from which we
derive our coast lines, rivers, roads, etc. This low resolution can lead to
pretty significant errors of hundreds of meters.
The solution is to use a better data set or make manual improvements to the
data set we use now.
