I agree with you about the convention - I'll put it back in even though
it is redundant redundant.
I had thought of one case where it might be annoying, and that would be
for a screen reader user, who would alway have to hear the two identical
links read at the top of every page. But I'm not sure how annoying that
would be and I've never checked with anyone about this ;)

Yes, that's what I was thinking: standard convention. I've been
re-reading "Don't Make Me Think" recently, including the part about
how that practice has become a convention, and so people expect it. I
agree that it seems unnecessary when there is a Home link right
under it, but some people will still click on the logo, expecting it
to take them home, and since there's no harm in making it a link...
