Not the answer you were probably looking for (and notwithstanding the academic search for a solution) but I wonder if you should rethink your data entry expectations? I'm assuming you have a reasonably length list of possible breeds. Any time I've come across a requirement to enter values from a long list, I (and clients) have been quite happy with using FM9 auto-completion, combined with drop-down lists if required. A moments training on how to use these effectively might circumvent the need for a complex calculated-field solution?
Might possibly work for a less complex scenario, Tim, and I thank you for the suggestion. However, the drop-down list I'm getting from the "Breeds" table is based on having ALREADY specified "Class" (Mammalia, Aves, etc.) and "Species" (Canine, Feline, Equine, etc.), so we can establish a "Breeds" value list based on a relationship to those previously filled fields.
