I realized after I said that, that we do that using PHP, most of our databases 
are accessed using PHP instead of the FileMaker Client. You are correct of 
course in that it won't work that way. Too bad FileMaker won't let you use 
another field for the sort while not requiring that field to be part of the 
value list to have it sort correctly and to be able to use the auto-complete.

Yeah, that would be nice but for one surprising side effect. Once you generate 
the value list that way, you can't jump directly to the part of the alphabet 
you want by typing the initial letter of the word you're after. Instead, 
WHATEVER letter you type takes you to the 1st item on the list (assuming you're 
using number to force the sort order).
